Peter Moore wants a Wii

Peter Moore: I want a free Wii
Posted May 24th 2006 1:00PM by David Hinkle
Filed under: Interviews

During a roundtable discussion at E3, Peter Moore discussed mostly his console, yet managed to take a second to say a thing or two on the Wii. In discussing the possibility of purchasing a Wii upon release later this year, Peter called upon Nintendo ass-kicker, and subsequent name-taker, Reggie Fils-Aime to hook him up with a free unit.

"Well I hope my friend Reggie [Fils-Aime] sends me one, I don't know. [laughs] Look I was there when Iwata-san pulled out that thing. I was there in the front row in Tokyo... and I said [to myself] "You've got to give 'em kudos for trying." And I'm literally going to go over there tomorrow and try to find Reggie or find Perrin [Kaplan] and I think Mario's the game... if you've got to play one game it's Mario. I'm sure I'll get one. Right now I'm trying to get my Brain Age down [laughs]. Look, it's not partisan; I love what Nintendo is doing."

So even though a little bit of that comes off as condescending, which you can't blame me for assuming as I wasn't there and only have text to work with, any press is good press, no?

Blue Ocean and Why Nintendo is Blue in the Face

What is Blue Ocean. It is a stragey concretely formulated by Professors W. Kim, and Renée Mauborgne of France's INSEAD Business School.

According to their critically acclaimed book Blue Ocean Stragey, there exists two oceans in which Corporations exist in when introducing a product or service. Red Ocean and Blue Ocean.

It is the Red Ocean that most companies try to focus their time and effort in. When companies of the same market try to exert marketining strategies or cut-throat measures to see their product to have the greatest market share, they are exhibiting a Red Ocean Stragegy (Red for blood, like sharks fighting over fish).

Some real examples are that of The Airline industry. Where slashing ticket prices of companies competing with each other caused massive layoffs, and bankrupcies of once profitable airlines.

Another example in the United States and Canada is Blockbuster video war. They engaged in massive battles with local video stores including Rogers video in Canada. Although with power strength they actually won instead of continuing to battle.

But what is this Blue Ocean Strategy these two authors are trying to emphasize. What other way is there to compete in a market for a product such as a MP3 player or video game system. They all do the same thing right? So How can a company not actually face cut-throat strategies to gain more profits?

Blue Ocean stragies focus on innovation rather than competition

1. DO NOT compete in existing market space. INSTEAD you should create uncontested market space.
2. DO NOT beat the competition. INSTEAD you should make the competition irrelevant.
3. DO NOT exploit existing demand. INSTEAD you should create and capture new demand.
4. DO NOT make the value/cost trade-off. INSTEAD you should break the value/cost trade-off.
5. DO NOT align the whole system of a company's activities with its strategic choice of differentiation or low cost. INSTEAD you should align the whole system of a company's activities in pursuit of both differentiation and low cost.

So this means that you shouldn't make another MP3 player you should make an iPod. You shouldn't make consumers buy your laptops you should have them customized like Dells. You shouldn't just get a celebrity to market your perfume, you should make nice smelling things natural and affordable to all, like the Body shop.

And this brings me to the position of you shouldn't just make beautiful graphics and the same old story, you should change the way you play games and bring in a wider audience.

This is the story with Nintendo's New Console officially named Wii.

When, Nintendo announced in 2005 that their future console would not have amazing graphics. People were like HUH!? How can you compete without having the best graphics.

When, Nintendo announced that it's controller will be one handed, people were like WTF! How can you not have duel anolog support.

When, Nintendo showed Zelda, Metroid, Red Steel, Mario, Wario Ware, Sonic at E3, people were like Ye Ye, Encore.

Yes these are the name of old franchises, they are played in a totally different way.

They are doing two things, lowering the cost of making games, making games more intuitive and fun, and bringing in a newer audience that used to play games but found in complicated. While this seems like a cop out, it's not. Who decided that every game had to be an empic with immerssive graphics and high quality FMV's. These days every game has to be an epic to reach a 9.0 on a gaming website. However, games are more of a chore in that we have to play 20-30 hours to finish. Sometimes a game will be more about beating it than actually having fun beating it.

Anyone who has played Brain Age on the Nintendo DS know what I am talking about.
Nintendo is taking the Blue Ocean approach and opening a new way of gaming that was never thought about before.

While Microsoft and Sony duke it out in red waters to see who has the best system, Nintendo will try to open up a new way of gaming that does not compete in this kind of way.

Thanks Nintendo for giving a product to us that's fresh and not the same thing with more guts.

PEACE

For Rap haters, check these artists

Hip Hop and rap artists have gotten a bad image in the past few years. I suppose this is because of the constant guns, sex, and violence that is sold in the songs and videos. I really feel bad for Hip Hop because it is a culture more than just a song genre. Hip Hop has turned to gangs, sex and money, which is funny because the ghetto has always remained the ghetto. No one in the ghetto is rich, unless it's corporations. Nevertheless, I have to stress that anyone who think hiphop or rap to not think 50 cent or songs that just make you dance. Yes, when rappers make songs that have a beat, it can be attributed to dancing, but that is not what all rap is about. Rap is probably the only genre in music that lets one express a whole story in 3-4 minutes. Lyrically speaking a true rapper can make you vibe to his words. A beat is only used to guide the lyrics. However, if the beat takes over the words, then the rapper didn't put out a good enough delivery and message. Yes, this has happened to 50 cent in his album the Massacre. Every track on that CD has a beat going BOOM, BOOM, BOOM, and theres no substance. The only track I personally like is "Hate it or Love it." This is because it has a message and tells a little background about 50's life and contains no gang violence or sex/money soliciting. But enough about 50 bashing, I can tell you theres a lot more crappier rappers who have sailed through the random BET videos posing as cash carrying, gun blazing posers. Granted some of the rappers may be coming out of gang environment in their youth, but does that mean they have to exploit this kind of behavior. NO, it doesn't give them the output to say that a lifestyle of shooting people on their beef list is right. Also the pimp image is played too much in rap videos and lyrics. Ok we get it women are fine, but do we have to continue seeing a hundred girls in thongs dancing in a video. Seriously, rap has changed since the 80's, moving towards a self-indulgent lifestyle. I think I have explained my point, and listening to these artists may change your view on what rap is about.

Will Smith Heads my List, because he has been always constant on what he brings to HipHop. He never changes, and never copies what others are trying to do. He does his own thing, and is respected in the Hip Hop community

1. The Rain
2. Coming to the Stage
3. Lost and Found (Song)
4. Uuhhh..
5. I'm Looking for the One

DMX is a very edgy rapper who always spits fire. One could say he's a black eminem. But his lyrics arn't as good, but he delivers then so well that its hard to knock on him.

1. Ruff Ryders Anthem
2. We In Here
3. Go To Sleep
4. Lord Give me a Sign

Kel Spencer. I can't say enough about this guy. This guy can have the delivery of DMX and the lyrical finesse of eminem. He tries not to rhyme rhymes just for the sake of rhyming, he makes stories and ties lines together to mean something. Currently he is unsigned by any major label, but is producing mixtapes every year. Check him on the back of Wild Wild West CD, and Willenium CD.

1. Uuhhh..
2. Black Hand Side
3. Ghetto (Feat. Akon)
4. I Got KO's/Number One
5. The Wilderness Part 1

Dilated peoples. They are a different face for HipHop. They are a group that basically rap in consecutive verses. They are very friendly and do not represent a gang image such as g-unit. They have positive songs and usually fun to listen to.

1. This way (feat. Kanye West)
2. Worst comes to Worst
3. Back Again
4. The Platform

Notable Mentions: Nas, Kanye West, The Game (Non-50 produced songs), Common, Mos Def, Chamillionre, Fort Minor, LLCOOLJ
